Famed paranormal experts Ed and Lorraine Warren investigate strange events at an isolated farmhouse.
Watch .. if you’re looking for an intelligent horror thriller that favors tension over gore. Director James Wan made his name with the bloody “Saw” movies, but he takes the early 1970s setting to heart, and comes up with a movie that is not just set in that era, but made in its style. He doesn’t want to gross us out – he wants to frighten us with good old-fashioned suspense. And he gets a big assist from his talented cast, particularly Vera Farmiga’s matter-of-fact ghost hunter and Lili Taylor’s good-hearted mom, who pivots into a possessed monster with scary ease. This may be a silly story, but the performances are convincing enough to bring us along.
Skip .. if you’ve seen enough movie exorcisms, or haunted house stories. The throwback style assumes affection for a pair of subgenres that have been done to death, so if you’ve sat through too many sequels or rip-offs of the “Exorcist” and “Amityville Horror” movies (and the Warrens were, before this film, best known for their participation in the Amityville tale), you may find this one overly familiar. And if subplots about children in peril are too upsetting, you may want to pass on this one.
